Non-suicidal self-injury: deliberate (immediate) damage to one"s own body tissue in the absence of suicidal intent and for reasons that are not culturally/socially acceptable. * typical onset: early-mid adolescence: rates: 14-24% , around adolescent or ya have done it. * but, it may start at any age. * youth: females>males, but, females seek help more often. * young adults: perhaps no differences (lifetime, females may self-injure more frequently. * female: may cut more, perhaps more injuries on wrists/thighs, may self-injure more often. * males: may hit/burn more, perhaps more injuries on hands & head. * negative emotionality: currently self-injure > previously self-injured > never self-injured. * those who self-injure may have more difficulty tolerating negative emotions & want to escape these experiences sooner. * experiential avoidance: attempts to avoid or escape from unwanted internal experience (ie. emotions, thought) or their triggers: may include nssi, but also other behaviors.
