There are 3 main mechanisms of social interaction that describe how personality interacts with situations: selection. Personality directs who we select as our friends, mates, etc: evocation. Personality qualities of others may evoke certain responses in us, and us in them: manipulation. Personality is linked to the ways in which we try to influence or manipulate others. In everyday life, people engage in situation selection and social selection: the choice to enter some situations and avoid others. Mate selection provides a dramatic example of this: when you select a long-term mate, you"re effectively selecting the social environment to which you are exposed and will reside. By selecting a mate, you are simultaneously selecting the social acts you will experience and the network of friends/family in which those acts will be carried out.
