The inherent desire to engage one"s interests and to exercise and develop one"s capacities. I am doing this (engaged activity) because it is (interesting, fun, enjoyable) type of motivation. Greater challenge, interest, enjoyment, and satisfaction in work itself = higher creativity. Flexible thinking, active information processing, learning in conceptual way instead of trying to memorize, actually understanding the concept. Greater self-actualization, less anxiety and depression, greater self-esteem . An environmentally created reason (ie: incentives or consequences) to engage in an action/activity. Do (requested behaviour) this in other to get that (extrinsic incentive or consequence) what in it for me. Study: a randomized, controlled trial of financial incentives for smoking cessation. Smoking leading preventable premature death cause is us. Financial incentives for smoking cessation mostly ineffective. Previous studies had limited power (not many individuals participating) Incentives may have been small (money was very low to ask them to stop)
