ARCH 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, Fluorine, Absolute Dating
Document Summary
Indirect methods- age of a fossil obtained by dating something directly associated with them. A common method is to sate stratigraphic layers directly above and below an object. Just know the context and location of fossil to get indirect dates because not all materials can be dated. Direct methods- apply the dating techniques to the object themselves. Relative dating- reveals whether an object is older or younger than another, not the actual age of the object. Absolute (chronometric) dating- provides an actual date with a plus or minus margin of error. Relative dating methods: creating a relative chronology- these relative chronologies place assemblages in a temporal sequence not directly linked to calendar dates. Stratigraphy- tells us that the layers that are the deepest are the oldest. Seriation- orders artifacts into series based on their similar attributes. For example the seriation of age of a car and how its changed throughout time. Fluorine analysis- chemical method used in relative dating.
