Document Summary

Modern cell theory the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life, so. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. New cells arise from the division of pre-existing cells. Central dogma to new cell via reproduction. Cells are small because they need to communicate with their outside environment. Must maintain an optimal surface area (sa) to volume (v) ratio. The smaller you are the larger your surface area in proportion to your volume. Larger cells have more surface area and volume than smaller cells. Having a proportionally large surface area is important because it responds to stimuli, maintain homeostasis and communicate. However, eukarya cells contain larger cells because endomembrane system and everything to do with semi atomic organelles. They take a large cell and break the large cell into smaller cells (internally) they use the endo semi to break the volume back down into smaller volumes and surorded by membrane.
