The rifle is the only kind of prayer (orisons) for the dying soldiers. Hasty - suddenss of death on the war front, nothing thoughtful of these deaths, quick, loud and messy. Soldiers become like animals while the guns become like people through personification, bridges the gap between the rifles and the people back home praying for the soldiers. Connections made between gun and prayer, people and animals.
