Document Summary

Case (and curse) is laid to rest in an athenian law court. Orestes goes to apollo"s temple to seek safety. Apollo puts furies to sleep and tells orestes to go to athens to visit athena. Athena puts up a court case to determine whether orestes should be condemned for killing mother or pardoned for avenging his father. Athena got deciding vote at the end. Said that orestes should be set free from his guilt because he was avenging his father (most significant responsibility should be to father, not father) Note: athena was masculine goddess so she sides with the male. Furies becomes furious that orestes were not punished. Crazed after trial that he has been pardoned. Athena persuades the furies to give in and accept the verdict. Political implications of story: the controversy of the areopagus. Orestes goes to far land of tauris. People of tauris hated strangers sacrificed them to artemis.
