Fell off but had a comeback with a tour with the clash in the late 1970s. Nicknamed the originator for his pioneering role. Have to look at the atmosphere of us post wwii. Us emerged as superpower, with huge economic growth. 6% of the population but consumed 1/3 of goods. Huge baby boom, and families were getting younger and larger. Average age of marriage 22 (men) 20 (women) This pushed the expansion of suburbs, freeways, cars (more affordable) The 1950s & the triumph of mass consumerism: tv"s, hi-fidelity audio, etc, new schools, new stores, symbol of the american dream.
