Document Summary

Worldwide, infectious diseases (pathogen-caused) are responsible for more than 15 million deaths each year which is 25% of all deaths worldwide. Pathogens include bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, parasitic worms, and prions. One bacteria can cause different diseases based on where the bacterium is located in the body. They are classified according to shape including bacilli (rod), cocci (spherical), spirochete (spiral), and vibrios (comma). They do not contain a nucleus, instead they have a nucleoid area. They reproduce via binary fission and thus very rapidly. In addition to their plasma membrane, they often have a cell wall and a protective capsule. They display remarkable adaptability and can be helpful or harmful to human health. Microbes occupy all of our body surfaced including our skin, our guts, and our mucous membranes. In fact, the human body contains 10 times more bacterial cells than human cells. One of the most beneficial roles they play is in our guts.
