Canada"s police strength = similar to a number of countries like japan, new zealand, but much higher than the us, england, scotland (337 officers per 100,000 population) Salaries for police are very good, median salary: 85,000 likely to go up to 90,000 usually with 3 years of service known as first class constable status. Cost of running whole entire criminal justice system in canada: approx. 60% = spend on policing, 13 billion. 20% = courts, legal aid, prosecutions, youth corrections. Police = most important in cjs, most to deal with offenders, their actions/decisions that invoke. Proportion of women who serve at senior non-commissional officers, lower level officers (increased 16%) still fewer women in higher ranks of policing, but has been some progress. Quebec has highest proportion of female officers (24%), while manitoba has the lowest (15%) Other law enforcement agencies, critique of the crime control model.
