But if you want to maintain relationship and stay away from conflict, then there needs to be collaboration. 5 primary communication/ conflict styles: competitive, avoiding, accommodating, compromising, collaborating. Your mode = your style, your skill and the situation (calm or storm) Based on work of thomas and kilman. Originated as a model to describe management styles (supervisor roles: then got picked up by communication field and then conflict field. There are things that others know about us that we don"t have a clue. There are things we don"t like about ourselves. There are things that we know about ourselves but we keep it hidden from others. There is also the unknown where nobody knows. Its my way or the highway : able to take quick action, can make unpopular decisions when needed, stands up for vital issues, protects him / herself.
