Emotion: psychological experience involving 3 components (1) subjective thoughts and experiences with (2) accompanying patterns of physical arousal and (3) characteristic behavioural expressions. Basic facial expressions hard-wired into our genetic makeup, rather than something learned from watching others. Autonomic nervous system: conveys info b/w spinal cord and blood vessels, glands, and smooth muscles of the body; maintains processes such as heart rate, respiration and digestion. Sympathetic nervous system: increases your energy and alertness to enable you to handle frightening or dangerous situations (activates fight or flight response) To fuel response, sympathetic nervous system draws energy away from bodily functions that can wait until the end of an emergency (immune responses/arousal) Parasympathetic nervous system: typically uses energy more sparingly, bringing your heart rate and respiration back to resting rates and focusing on non-emergency tasks, such as digestion. Autonomic responses increase when someone lie (polygraph) Increased activity in frontal and parietal lobes when telling lie (brain imaging better)
