SOC101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Class Conflict, False Consciousness, Class Consciousness
Document Summary
Four premises of stratification: stratification is society-based not individually based. So when we talk about difference and inequality we"re talking about a systemic issue. An issue within the structure of society that builds advantage and disadvantage into society and how social systems perpetuates that: from one generation to the next it continues/influences our life chances. Looking at social mobility; how people move through classes, it starts where it"s from: stratification is universal and variable. All societies have differences but not all societies have differences in the same way. There is an economic difference in the world but how those people become poor and rich are not the same around the world: related to beliefs. Our differences can be justified through our minds. We all build beliefs system in order to justify advantages we have or to critique the system that gives us the disadvantage as a way to trying to create equality.
