Document Summary

Glycolysis occurs in almost all living organisms, but does not generate much energy as atp: end product (pyruvate) still contains lots of chemical potential energy in its bonds. In presence of oxygen, pyruvate can be further oxidized to release more energy: first to acetyl-coa and then in series of reactions in citric acid cycle. Pyruvate oxidation as key step that links glycolysis to citric acid cycle. Oxidation of pyruvate connects glycolysis to citric acid cycle. End product of glycolysis, pyruvate, gets transported to mitochondria: double membrane system with distances between the two depending due to folds of inner membrane, membranes define two spaces: Intermembrane space (space b/w inner and outer membrane) Mitochondrial matrix (space enclosed by inner membrane system) Pyruvate is brought to mitochondrial matrix and is converted into acetyl-coa: pyruvate molecule is oxidized and splits off to form carbon dioxide. Most oxidized and least energetic version of carbon.
