BIOL 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Gtpase, Endomembrane System, Cytoskeleton
Document Summary
Quick guide to protein processing in the er. All proteins are processed: after translation on ribosomes in the cytosolic compartment, all proteins are processed either in the cytosol or in the er/golgi system. The initial stages of protein processing involve folding: remember that folding of proteins take place through interaction with chaperone proteins, proteins that are not properly folded are destroyed. In the cytosol compartment, they are tagged with ubiquitin and destroyed by proteasomes. In the er, improperly folded proteins are returned to the cytosol and destroyed in the same way as are improperly folded cytosolic proteins. Red arrows forward vesicular trafficking (forward or out of the cell towards the out direction) Blue arrows backward trafficking (back towards the golgi) Vesicles must take the correct cargo from the donor compartment to the correct target compartment. This (cid:373)ea(cid:374)s that : the correct cargo must get into the correct vesicle, and, the correct vesicle must get to the correct destination.
