CAPS 391 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Arachnoid Mater, Dura Mater, Pia Mater
Document Summary
Projection fibers: getting into or out of the cerebrum - connects cerebrum to the brainstem or spinal cord, or connects the brainstem and spinal cord to the cerebrum. Internal capsule: largest example of projection fibers (95% of ascending and descending pathways connected to the cerebrum) Lateral ventricles: one in the left hemisphere, one in the right; has 3 horns: Cerebral aqueduct: long duct that connects 3rd ventricle to 4th ventricle. Corey plexus: produces cerebrospinal fluid - happens inside the ventricles. Starts with lateral ventricles to third ventricle, then passes to the 4th ventricle through the cerebral aqueduct. Dura mater: outermost layer; made of dense, irregular connective tissue. There to mechanically protect the central nervous system. Arachnoid mater: made up of loose connective tissue; cannot provide mechanical protection, but is involved in circulation (not production of csf) Arachnoid = spider - looks like a spider web.
