The elephants have a more critical period for reattachment, if they couldn"t attach within 48 hours they usually couldn"t save them, they need a connection with the older females. If the baby has been away from the mom for over 5 months they can sometime reject their mom. The role of the male elephant, the male elephants do not have this desire to look after yong, they are not interested. Humans are not like that, they want that attachment. The emotional reaction to separation from care givers is similar. They will cry or actively search for the care giver. After protest then you see despair, tey are starting to give up. Third part is the detachment, this is when the withdrawl, arounf 5 months for humans much less for elephants. Elephants have capacity for memory so they can grieve, they can have separation anxiety.
