Post materialism- an effort of political scientists to explain the appearance of and significance of political ideas e. g. human rights, environmental justice, feminism. Inglehart suggested that people who grow up in an environment that is economically secure are going to be interested in issues that aren"t directly related to economics, less worried about economic circumstances, they are interested in non-material ideas. People who grow up in an environment that is economically insecure make most of their political decisions related to economics e. g. jobs. Post ww2 ideas compete with economic stability, not about national issues. Emergence of specific political parties e. g. green party. North americans had a long period of economic growth and security. New political ideas rose to prominence e. g. civil rights movement, second-wave feminism, decolonization movement, environmentalism, human rights. Direct outcome to the horrors of the holocaust in ww2. 1962 rachel carson wrote a book called silent spring beginning of environmental movement.
