Document Summary

Conservative idea goes back several centuries in europe. Aristocracy formed the main people in government. Occupied positions of social and economic power. People in the elite structure in canada were from britain who had money to invest. Quebec- when it was part of the french empire there was a french aristocracy. When britain won the war the french aristocracy left so the english-speaking canadian elites established themselves in quebec. Ontario- family compact members of the elites, wealthy, big business investments. Making sure that the society was peaceful. They governed and the masses accepted that. Reciprocal responsibility early characteristic of canadian society. Lots of poverty though, low education for children. Only for christians (social welfare) e. g. soup kitchens, sunday schools, church- funded hospitals. Elites were willing to pay their taxes because their workers were educated and taken care of. Red tory is a modern term, red represents socialism and communism.
