RELG 203 Lecture 3: Week 8-3 Lecture Notes
Document Summary
1, 2 and 3rd john -> catholic epistiles. After the pauline letters and the gospels, and excepting revelation, there is a slew of letters that are written by various gures - known and unknown - that make up the remainder of the nt. Many of these books were disputed within the early church, so we will look both at the way that the early church treated each of these books, and the way that scholars treat them today. The early church does not give us a clear, de ned, uni ed notion to biblical authority. The general epistles are also known as the catholic" or universal" epistles, because, although they were sent to speci c situations (or purport to be so), they are no addressed to speci c cities. However, each of these needs to be looked at individually , and in some cases, in relation to other works.
