SOCI 217 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Explained Variation, Null Hypothesis
Week 11- social statistics
Important things to know
• Coefficients (b)
• Null hypothesis
• Measures of significance (*)
• Explained variation (R2)
• Negative value means it is going down
o But we only care if it is statistically significant (*)
o If there is no * then only say it is not statistically significant
• Using 3 models
o Adding more variables each time
• R2
o Amount of variation in the IV explaining the DV
o Choose the model with the highest R2
• Pearson’s r
o Tells us the strength of the relationship
o Square it to give R2
• Regression equation
o It should only contain variables that are statistically significant
o E.g. table 5
▪ 1. personal income = a + -0.21 (female) + -0.27 (family immigrants) + e
▪ 2. personal income = a + -0.24 (female)+ -0.25 (family immigrants) + 0.22
(high school) + 0.17 (college) + 0.18 (graduate) + e
