Week 4- Race and anti-racism
Components of Racism
• 1. Prejudice
o negative preconceived notions about others
o attitude, belief
• 2. Discrimination
o restrictive act that has the intent or effect of affecting others on their merit and
ability
• 3. Institutional power
o backed by authority of the state and bolster by political arrangements and legal
statuses
o policy of assimilation
o Chinese head tax
• Harassment
o Action that bothers someone involving threats or intimidation, unwelcomed
physical contact, unfair treatment on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion
or other attributes
Sectors of racism
• 1. Interpersonal (hate, polite, subliminal)
o subliminal- rais that is eedded i us, e ofte do’t realize it, unconscious
o polite- expressing racial belief but not coming across racist
▪ your pretty athletic for a Chinese guy
o hate- direct hatred of the racialized other
• 2. Institutional (systematic and systemic)
o systematic- deliberately and directly prevent minorities from full and equal
institutional involvement
▪ not giving loans to minority
o systemic- unconscious, rules and practices that are racist but we just follow them
• 3. Ideological (everyday, normative)
o everyday- unconscious speech habits and everyday actions
o normative- unconscious bias towards others because of cultural values
▪ racism against aboriginals
• 4. Infrastructural (society)
o racism that is built in the system
o Canada is built like a white man society even though we are multicultural
