PSYC*4160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Human Services, Headon
Document Summary
Aggressive and un-cooperating behaviour pursing own interests at the expense of another. Attempt to gain power by direct confrontation, by trying to win" the argument. Can be employed in an assertive rather than an aggressive manner. Non-assertive people deny themselves and inhibit their expression of feelings and open striving for goals. Assertive people enhance the self, work toward achieving desired goals, and are expressive. Goals are accomplished at the expense of others. Can be assertive without berating, ridiculing, or damaging the other. Verbal aggressiveness hurts the face, self-esteem, or reputation of the other. When a person is argumentative and not aggressive, the ability to work toward shared problem solving remains alive. Can be productive if you don"t destroy the other person. Relationship focus is maintained even when the topic is debated. A limited amount is available, so the best proposal for solving a human services problem will be funded. The director of the agency competes with other directors for funding.
