Week 1: Intro to Research Methods
What did you do when you entered the class?
-Listen to music or power nap > subjective self > disinterest
-Tinker on laptop > kinetic (subjective) self > Preoccupied
-Chat > Intersubjective > Social
-Observe > Ground > Interest in social interactions
-Judgement terms are problematic good or bad
-What assumptions/biases did you start with?
-What changed when grouping yourselves?
-Did anything change after grouping yourselves?
-What changed after grouping yourselves?
1. Social “Science” - Some objective truth is available to be found. Reality?
2. Quantitative - Data collection based in large numbers; repetitive, transferable,
dependable, valid
3. Qualitative - In-depth data collection: Smaller data source and Triangularity
4. Grounded Approach No preconceived theoretical framework, Theme emerges
from the data (observations), “How does this social space work” , Inductive (I
could be wrong, he could be my father, recognizing potential error)
5. Ethnography
a. Naturalistic observations and Holistic understanding
b. Deductive
c. Frame analysis – what has meaning in a group
d. Stand in their shoes (emic perspective). apply theoretical concepts as an
overview (etic)
premise + premise = Conclusion
