Memory
Lecture 7
Improve memory by learning more about how it works
What is memory?
• Any indication that learning has persisted over time
o Store and retrieve info
• If memory was non-existent
o Everyone would be a stranger
o You would be a stranger
Memory is not exact
• Just eause ifo akes ito eor does’t ea its retrieved i eat for
• Memory is a reconstruction, not replication, of reality
Information processing approach
• Memory
o Encoding -> storage -> retrieval
• Three stage memory model (main one)
o Sensory memory storage -> short-term memory (STM) storage -> long-term
memory (LTM) storage
Sensory and working (short term memory) Memory
• Sensory memory (events) -> working memory (encoding) -> long-term memory
(retrieval)
Capacity of working memory
• 7 chunks of information, plus or minus two (5-9)
• remember more when put chunks together
Whole report
• Exposure time for the stimulus is so small that items cannot be rehearsed
Sensory memories
• Last aout half a seod if ou do’t are aout the
• Duration of sensory memory varies for different sense
Easiest way to remember something is to repeat it
Rehearsal
• Ebbinghaus studies rehearsal by using nonsense syllables

Document Summary
Improve memory by learning more about how it works. What is memory: any indication that learning has persisted over time, store and retrieve info. If memory was non-existent: everyone would be a stranger, you would be a stranger.
