Improves focus, flexibility, action orientation, coordination, control, and time management. 3 types: short range (1 year or less), intermediate range and long range plans (3 or more: capability to deal effectively varies with time horizons, higher management levels focus on long term plans. Strategic, operational and tactical plans: strategic: broad, comprehensive, longer term action directions, tactical: defines specific functions to implement strategic plans, operational: policies (broad guidelines) and procedures (describe exact actions) Budget: fixed, flexible and zero based, single use plans that commit resources to activities, events etc. Forecasting: predicting the future, qualitative (expert opinions) or quantitative (mathematical or statistics) Contingency planning: short term, anticipate changing conditions. Scenario planning: long term, alternative future scenarios, worst/ best case scenarios.
