ANP 1106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hyaline Cartilage, Bone, Pubic Symphysis
Document Summary
Perichondrium: connective tissue that surrounds the cartilage. Contains blood vessels in which nutrients travel. Lacunae: localized cavities with clusters of chondrocytes in the cartilage. Provides firm support and has lots of collagen. Found in embryonic skull, ends of long bone, costal cartilage of ribs, cartilage of nose, trachea, larynx. Fibrocartilage: rows of chondrocytes alternating with rows of thick collagen fibers. Structural intermediate between hyaline cartilage and dense ct. Found in intervertebral disk, pubic symphysis, discs of knee joints. Bones are classified by their shape, not their size! Spongy bones: form internal surface from honeycomb of trabeculae. Periosteum: outer fibrous layer + inner osteogenic layer. Endosteum: covers trabeculae and lines canals of compact bone. Primarily spongy bone + thin outer layer of compact bone. Flat bones: thin, flattened, and sometimes curved. Irregular: leftovers such as vertebrae and hip bones. Complicated shapes primarily out of spongy bones + thin layer of compact bone. Diaphysis: tubular shaft of the long bone.
