ANP 1106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Resting Potential, Neurotransmitter Receptor, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Cytoplasm inside plasma membrane negatively charged relaive to outside. Diferent types of neurons rmp -40 to -90 mv. Resing membrane potenial generated by: diferences in na+ and k+ inside/outside cell, diferences in permeability of na+/k, ion channels in membrane, changes in resing membrane potenial allow neurons to receive, integrate and send signals/informaion!! Aka receptor/generator (ex heat light sensory receptor) or postsynapic. Current lows in all directions but dies out within a few mm of origin. Gp"s essenial in iniiaing long distance acion potenials! Used to transmit nerve signals over long distances. Similarity with graded potenials, begin with brief simulus in small area of membrane. Difference from graded potentials: only cells with excitable membranes generate ap"s, do not decay with distance, typically only in axons, begin as graded potenials in dendrites/cell bodies, all or nothing response, only if simulus is adequate.
