Plagues were common throughou t history: entire villages would die from disease, cures and treatments failed . In middle ages a quarter of the population died from this. they were useless and dangerous: no idea what disease was caused by, back in the day, plague doctors! Wore a mask to protect from disease: believed that disease was caused by bad smell. Cause of disease was unknown: this would basically be a curse from god, spontaneous generation, bad smell or unclean conditions (miasma, to cure disease, you round up whoever is offending god and just kill them. When the people are dead offense is gone. Wwi and wwii more deaths due to infection than combat: stds killed more soldiers than anything else, stds are the reason why university students visit doctors the most. Cholera cases were all centered around a particular water pump. It was the water from that pump that caused the disease.
