Why listening matters
Study points to some interesting things
91% of employees who rated their managers as good listeners said they were satisfied with their
jobs
Why might a good manager influence your work experience and make you satisfied? your
needs are being met; you feel valued; your opinions and ideas feel respected. You feel like
our ideas are alued. It’s soethig that the perso’s oeig i the eaples, i their
behaviour.
58% of managers rated as good listeners had received listening training
We do’t get uh traiig i listeig. Most of our traiig i shool is o ritig ad
reading and speaking.
89% of poor listeners had no training
58% of the highly rated listener group were women (they used more nonverbal cues)
Women hare known to use more nonverbal cues that indicate their listening. Whether
the’re listeig or ot, the sho the sae ore effetiel.
Cues: nodding, eye contact, leaning towards the speaker, facial expression will mimic the
emotion being conveyed, paravocal/ paralinguistic cues- ex: mhm, oh, wow
That’s h oe are ofte pereied to e as good listeers
Guys convey fewer facial expressions than women; example: in grade school guys will smile
in school photos but as they grow older the’ll drop the sile.

The listening process
1. Selecting
Hearing is not listening- hearing is the soundwaves bouncing off of our eardrums
Listening is not easy- meant to be an activity that requires brain power, actual physical
power
Hearing problems
Personal concerns
Rapid thought- ou’re thikig fast ad the other perso is speakig slol
Noise- external, psychological noise- e do’t like the perso speakig, phsiologial
noise
All listeners do not receive the same message- what we think is important is very individual;
it means different things to us
Poor listening habits
Information overload
E: researh shos that he phoes are plaed o the desk, it’s detrietal eause on
person will disclose less in fear of getting interrupted by a text message or phone call

Document Summary

Your needs are being met; you feel valued; your opinions and ideas feel respected. 6: the listening process- selecting, understanding, remembering, responding. Selecting: hearing is not listening- hearing is the soundwaves bouncing off of our eardrums. Information overload and multitasking: the parts of the brain doing the individual tasks- both parts of the brain went down in individual capacity. They had other subjects who simply listened to the information. 13: structured use of the laptop- planned use of technology for learning, most students reported that because they were so involved- they found that they were more engaged and actively learning in the classroom. Understanding- decode sounds into meaningful patterns: 3. Remembering- recall the info you heard: 4. Responding- provide feedback and demonstrate understanding of the message: we validate the message by confirming our sense of worth and value within the conversation, example with bosses.
