Document Summary
Communication: social and cultural forms: we must understand communication systems in order to understand society. Society, culture, and media: society: the body of institutions and relationships within which people live; the conditions in which such relationships are formed. Social norms are an institution as well: culture: the process of intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic development; the works and practices that arise from this development; a particular way of life. System of agreeing upon signifiers (semiotic version) *not fixed definitions: media helps to share/define society/culture. Can be seen as a threat because it exposes us to external influences. Must regulate media to protect from that. High vs. low culture: culture constitutes highly educated/wealthy (distinction between elite and inferior) Shakespeare vs. wwe: high culture advances national interest, low culture goes against what is good for you, 1960"s - we wanted to move against this distinction. When thinking of culture we must look at everyday actions rather than the elite.
