Many scholars began to question the rational models of organizations: > karl weick; andrew pettigrew; cohen, march and olson; clifford geertz. Rationality: that decisions, mission statements, goals, etc. are planned , carefully considered, weighed. They suggested that these theories do not take into account the symbolic in uences on the ways organizational members interpret organizational life. Garbage can theory (cohen, march & olson, 1972) As weick (1976) says, organizing activities are loosely coupled . As herbert simon (1957) suggested, we sacri ce because we operate within bounded rationality . We can see the role of chance, luck and sense making. We choose to make sense of things in order for our satis ce to work. Common understandings about what to think, feel, believe, do, etc. Physical manifestation of the group (clothing, shelter, tools, weapons, etc). Patterns of shared values and beliefs that over time produce behavioural norms adopted in solving problems (hofstede, neuijen, ohayv & sanders, 1990; owens, 1987).
