Most prevalent preventable development disability in Canada (3%)
Only 10% show physical dysphoria
Usually displayed in the news as for example: the cause of
misbehavior of teens who have been adopted and have it
oBring about a lot of negative self-thought
Birth mothers do not intentionally cause FASD
oMay be unaware of pregnancy
oMay be poorly informed about danger of alcohol during
pregnancy
oMay suffer from addiction and lack support to quit
Prevention of FASD
oObjective: reduce rates of FASD
oTypical methods: fear inducing messages
Guilt, shame, stigma,
Results in increase addiction levels and adoption
Challenge is discouraging women to drink while pregnant, through
support rather than scaring/shaming them
oWomen should be allowed to do what they want with their own
bodies, but must be educated about the consequences of
drinking while pregnant
