1: acquire skills to expand your theoretical imagination- to do theory learn different theories/ approaches to explaining communication. Can be a guess, class needed to take, esoteric blah blah blah , model, experimentally tested conjecture, description of whats hidden from sight, etc. In this class, theory is separated as a: Axiom 1: theory is an attempt to explain our experience of the world. Axiom 2: if the explanation theory offers doesn"t match our experience, it"s bad theory. 2a: in the end, it"s all bad theory. Theories are all good for some things and not others. It will never explain everything, and will be better at explaining some things rather than others. Axiom 3: we must refine our explanation to replace bad theory with better theory. Claim to treat traditions equally but favour the sociopsychological. Cant account fro feminist or intercultural research (among others) Seen in phenomenological, rhetorical, and sociocultural traditions. Ask me (and others) the questions readings raise for you.
