Criminal law is designed to protect society from actions or behaviours it considers harmful or potentially harmful to collective life. There are several different mechanisms through which the law is thought to work to achieve these aims there are the logics of punishments. Discrete (sometimes overlapping) stages to criminal processes: Police are responsible for gathering evidence leading up to the laying of charges in criminal investigations. The courts function through the adversarial system: believe that through argument and conformation we will ultimately uncover the best truth possible. An accused is innocent until the crown can prove him or her guilty through presenting incriminating evidence which the defense has full opportunity to rebut. Factual guilt is based on evidence of a person"s commission of a crime.
