Crm soc day 8 february 8, 2018. Social problems can be approached in an: objectivist vs. constructionist viewpoints: objectivism vs. constructionist viewpoint to social problems. Objectivist social problems are defined by objective, concrete existence of a damaging or threatening condition. Something that threatens and damages society, something that causes death, shortens our lives, like drugs and drunk driving. They are constructed by the human mind. They view social problems as socially constructed. The way we collectively define it as a problem. There is a process in which things are defined as a problem. How people were described as witches and how they were prosecuted. Focuses exclusively on the nature of claims-making. All objective" accounts are claims-making activity (ex: spector & kitsuse"s writings- hard) how they become social problems, they argue that everything is socially constructed: moderate / soft / contextual constructionism. Considers why some harmful conditions are not considered serious social problems while other less harmful ones are.
