Document Summary

5th/6th century (the year 550) to the end of the 11th century. The early end is caused by the invasions during the 5th and 6th centuries. It was a province of rome up until the 5th century where the romans then withdrew from britain as a colony (it was too expensive for them). The british who were very romanized due to this, were culturally advanced but not militarily as they relied on the romans. They began to be invaded and called for help from the jutes, angles, and saxons but the ones they called to decided to just invade britain as they were so weak and took over (cornwall, wales, and scotland) The period in which literature is primarily written in the language that was spoken by the angles, saxons, and jutes. They were speaking a language we now describe as northern germanic or what we now see as scandinavian.
