Erosion= dislodging and movement of soil by wind or water. Soil formation is a very long process (500-10,000 years) Important aspect, soil serves as a method of feeding the human population and serves as a habitat for other organisms. Complex organic matrix in the soil, why there is brown in streams its naturally occurring because of the om in the soil. Microbes cannot access/decompose lignin, they use lignin modifying enzymes (lme) to break down the molecule into simple monomers. Soil is fertile if it contains high level of stable om. Soil: the foundation for feeding a growing population. Light energy and humans are the two ways to increase land productivity. Humans add fertilizers and these wash off and don"t necessarily help the productivity, leads to more death zones. Main limiting factor on earth is nitrogen (not bioavailable on earth), need to be transformed to a bioavailable form by microbes.
