Document Summary

Micro = small, bio = life, logy = study of. Immunology: study of our protection from foreign macromolecules or invading organisms and our responses to them. Bacteria: no separate nucleus, unicellular: rigid cell wall, genetic material in circular chromosome, no nucleus, both dna and rna, binary fission, mycoplasmas are similar to bacteria but don"t have rigid wall, more delicate. Gi tract: colon has anaerobes and coliforms. What they do: protection from bad bacteria, metabolism, immune stimulation. Infections with bacteria happen when a single species becomes predominant at a site where there is usually lots of species, or when a single organism invades a body site that is normally sterile. Mechanical barriers: skin is the main one, saliva, mucous, tears, hairs etc. Other helpers include: antibodies: may function as opsonin or may kill organisms directly, complement: complex system of plasma proteins that work together to resist bacterial infection.
