HSS 2321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Northern Health, Northern Ontario, Gilgit-Baltistan
Document Summary
Sociopolitical and economic perspectives in health lecture 16. In health, the rural and northern health care panel recommended defining rural, remote, and north or northern, acknowledging that the degree of each was relative. Determinants of rural health: smith, humphreys & wilson (2008) identify four broad determinants of rural health, geographical location and rural environments, rural lifestyles, socioeconomic conditions, race and ethnicity. Geographical location and rural environments direct effects: geographical location and rural environments have direct effects on risk, vulnerability and conditions of daily living, limited or lack of infrastructure to deliver clean drinking water and other wash conditions. Example: northern ontario: e(cid:454)te(cid:374)si(cid:448)e t(cid:396)a(cid:448)el fo(cid:396) health (cid:272)a(cid:396)e se(cid:396)(cid:448)i(cid:272)es, e(cid:448)e(cid:374) outside of (cid:858)u(cid:396)(cid:271)a(cid:374)(cid:859) (cid:272)e(cid:374)t(cid:396)es, many communities do not have the breadth or permanence of health care providers. "everyone knows everyone" limits real or perceived confidentiality and anonymity, leading people to not seek available local care.
