HSS 2342 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Nutrient Density, Sorbitol, Rheumatoid Arthritis
Document Summary
Life cycle nutrition: adulthood and the later years: introduction. While in 1921, about 1 in 20 people were 65 years or older, the number is now 1 in 8 and is expected to reach even higher numbers in 2021. Our life expectancy is now 83 years for women and 79 years for men, and is mainly attributed to advances in medical science and the abundance of food available. Interestingly, the latter point is also a cause for decreased longevity. Disease can be attributed to genetics, aging, and environmental factors. Aging is an inevitable process and is programmed in our genes, however it may be slowed by our lifestyle (ie. nutrition and exercise): observation of older adults: healthy habits and physical activity. Over the years, the accumulation of lifestyle factors will determine how long someone lives and how many disabilities they have.
