Lecture 4 socioeconomic determinants of health chapter 3 part 1. Social determinants of health = personal factors and community conditions that enable or hinder access to health are collectively. People who have low ses tend to have significantly reduced health status compared to people from higher ses populations. Health disparity = health inequality = an avoidable difference in health status between population groups. Inequity = a health inequality that is considered to be unfair and unjust. The hdi has increased in most countries over the past 25 years, but there are significant gaps between the richest countries and the poorest countries. Higher hdi is correlated with better health status and greater levels of happiness. The human development index is increasing as people live longer, spend more years in school and earn more. A higher proportion of people in countries that are happier report being happier.
