The kidney reclaims important water and nutrients before they are excreted in the urine. The more the fluid in the vascular system, the higher the increase on blood pressure. Pharmacology topic: to reduce bp, you get the patient to eliminate more water via urine. Kidney failure: possible we are not eliminating an appropriate amount of fluid meaning it has to go somewhere and because of the pressure, it might go to the lungs (pneumonia), tissue (edema), or heart (congestive heart failure) A filtration system made up of functional units called nephrons. It filters the blood and so there is a close relationship between the vascular system and the renal system. Nephrons: functional units located in renal cortex: Renal corpuscle: filtering unit with glomerulus and glomerular capsule. Renal tubule: proximal convoluted tubule, loops of henle, and distal convoluted tubule. Urine production promotes homeostasis by regulating volume and composition of blood. Creatinine: produced in skeletal muscle tissue in energy metabolism.
