Words are always neutral until you attach a context. Principle-based: some things are absolutely right or wrong in and of themselves, wrong or right in principle. Deon means duty to do what is right and avoid what is wrong. How do you determine what is right and wrong: always determined before analyzing the consequences (prior to analyzing a good outcome or circumstance) Deontological constraints: lines they do not cross regardless of the outcome: wrong in principle, wrong in and of itself, wrongness comes first before the outcome, something is intrinsically (automatically) and self-evidently wrong. Sanctity of life you should be against capital punishment because the life of the fetus should equal the life of the criminal/terrorist: limits of deontology. Any deontologist who comes up with policy will increase suffering: for women: prohibiting abortions in every circumstance (emotional suffering, for terminally ill: prohibiting them from physician assisted suicide and prolonging their suffering.
