MUS 2310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Monophony, Homophony, Juilliard School
Document Summary
Combining instruments from different families produces different timbral effects and tone colours that can create different moods. Combing flutes+ horns gives us a different timbre than other combinations (to create unique and unusual sounds) Texture: the creation of sound is often called layering . Monophony: a single line of music, no background. Ex: a singing happy birthday with a group of friends. Homophony: texture consisting of more than one line, but each line moves with more of less rhythm. Singing at the same rate, but different harmonies. Melody and accompaniment: a tune is supported by its accompaniment, making for a strong functional separation of foreground and background. Two distinct melodies sounding at the same time. Ex: break the class into three sections and sing row your boat. Each section starts after one an other, then all together. Ex: everyone argues at the same time, no one voice is more powerful than another: counterpoint.
