NSG 3320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Binge Eating Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Binge Eating
Document Summary
33% say social media makes them more self conscious. Teenage boys focus on gaining muscles, striving for thinness and muscularity, or just thinness. These disorders occur in males and females and cross ethnic, racial and economic lines. Eds are the 3rd most common chronic conditions in adolescent females and are the most lethal of all psychiatric conditions. Peak onset 14-18years: eds arise from a place of low self-esteem, misery, stress. Self-loathing, pain, sadness, fear, guilt, shame and anger: depression and anxiety disorders often co-morbidities. How to help as parent/sister/brother: be a role model, educate on media manipulation, compliment deeper qualities, nurture personality and interests, provide health role models, listen without judging. How to help a loved one: understanding and support over control. Eds are a sign of much bigger problems; avoid focusing on food or eating habits alone. Be aware of own attitudes and behaviours around food and body image.
