Curative care: focuses on a cure to an illness and the prolonging of life. Hospice care: focuses on comfort and qol when a cure is not possible with specialized care and services. Eol care: care provided in last days of weeks of life. Focuses on physical and psychosocial needs at eol for pt and family. Palliative care: focuses on comfort and qol that may be provided with other tx. Goal to improve qol for patient and family. Can benefit anyone with a life-limiting illness: cancer, chf, copd, cf, esrd, liver disease, neurological diseases (ms, als, parkinson"s). Affirm life and neither hasten nor postpone death. Offer support to clients to live as actively as possible until death. Offer support to the family during the client"s illness and in their own bereavement. Five components of quality eol care: adequate pain and symptom management, avoiding inappropriate prolongation of dying, achieving a sense of control, relieving burden, strengthening relationships with loved ones.
