PHI 2396 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Moral Relativism, Relativism, Rationality

23 views3 pages

Document Summary

If you say that there is no real right and wrong, then morals is just fashion. We have no right to judge people in different cultures because they have their own values. Anthropologists say moral values are really just rules that are made in a particular place and time that make the society work. Pragmatic: what is right or wrong, based on reality instead of theory. Without a universal standard there is no such thing as moral progress. Moral progress aims towards the universal standard. Relativist: you have no right to tell another culture what to do and certainly don"t have a right to force them to do something. Problem: if you really believe that something is wrong, it should be wrong for everyone, not just you. Emotivism: feelings, emotions: but people don"t feel the same about actions and behaviours.
