Autonomy is a persons rational capacity for self governance or self determination. Autonomy principle - autonomous persons should be allowed to excursive their capacity for self determination (normative principal, something we should respect) The overriding of a persons actions or decision making for his or her own good. Weak paternalism is directed at persons with little or no autonomy. Ie. homes for people with dimensia where the doors lock with codes so they cant wonder away. Strong paternalism is the overriding of actions or choices of a person who is substantially autonomous. Having to wear a seatbelt otherwise you"ll get a ticket. The courts have established the principle that a competent autonomous person can refuse treatment.
