Document Summary
How do we end up feeling/thinking/behaving: evaluating the trait perspective. According to the trait perspective, traits are powerful predictors of behavior. Michael: says traits are poor predictors of behaviors. His research indicates that human behavior is inconsistent. Seymour epstein: says that michael is both correct and incorrect. Correct: if you are going to use traits to predict behaviors in a speci c situation, they are poor predictors. Incorrect: traits are good predictors to predict behaviors on average across a number of situations: the behavior perspective. Personality is completely shaped by the environment. According to this perspective, every behavior produces a consequence. If the behavior produces a desired consequence, we are more likely to repeat the behavior. The opposite is true for undesired consequences. Bottom line => we do the things we do because they have payoffs. Cannot base all on environmental factors: the social cognitive perspective. Personality is the result of a complex interaction between social and cognitive factors.
